A breakthrough in breeding has produced this wonderful little tree, which is compact enough to be grown in a pot on the patio. It’s such a remarkable thing that it was awarded RHS Chelsea Flower Show Plant of the Year in 2017. Amongst other things, the judges felt it was worthy because of its ability to produce fruits on both new and old wood – and that means that it’s possible to be harvesting these tasty treats over a several months (often from May to September). Another noteworthy feature is that the trees will usually start to fruit at a very young age – even within their first year, and without the need of a pollination partner.
- Garden care: Prepare the ground well before planting. Plant in full sun out of cold, drying winds. Little pruning is needed apart from removing low, dead, diseased or crossing branches. This must be tackled in winter to prevent the stems ‘bleeding’.
