If you are fed up with feeding the slugs, then these plants are perfect as they don’t find them particularly tasty.

In this collection you will receive one of each of the following plants. They are all supplied in a 9cm nursery pot.

Aquilegia vulgaris var. stellata ‘Ruby Port’: A popular plant among garden designers, this lovely granny’s bonnet has beautiful, fully double, spur-less burgundy flowers in late spring above ferny green leaves. The rich, deep red flowers look particularly lovely with fountainous grasses or with traditional cottage garden flowers. This plant is happiest in soil that retains moisture over the summer. It is quite short-lived, but self-seeds freely, though it rarely becomes a nuisance. Grows to 90cm.

Astrantia major ‘Penny’s Pink’: A new, very free-flowering Astrantia that provides summer-long interest. Each rich pink flower cluster is surrounded by a ruff of green flushed, pale pink bracts, which are attractively veined with a deeper pink. Wonderful in the mixed or herbaceous border, they make easy companions for a host of other ornamentals including grasses. Grows to 75cm.

Geranium phaeum: A useful geranium that will thrive even in damp or dry shade. It has small, deep maroon-black flowers in late spring to early summer, and these are held high above the soft-green, deeply lobed leaves, which are often blotched with purple. It will quickly spread to form a hummock of foliage that is excellent for suppressing weeds. Grows to 1m.

Penstemon ‘Andenken an Friedrich Hahn’: Elegant spikes of small, tubular, foxglove-like flowers appear from July to October among lance-shaped, bright green leaves. This vibrant, easy-to-grow perennial commemorates an 18th century German astronomer. It will quickly form large, leafy clumps and is perfect for adding a splash of colour to the middle of a sunny, well-drained border. The sumptuous, deep wine-red flowers contrast well with acid greens and silver leaved plants or with wispy grasses and spiky leaves. Grows to 50cm.

Planting tips: Prepare the bed well by digging in lots of composted organic matter before you plant. For best results it is essential that the plants are kept well watered for the first year, particularly during warmer weather.
